Rug Suggestions for Our Living Room?
Good Questions

sqsm110609.JPGQ: As newlyweds, my husband and I have set about making our house a home. My question for you is regarding our living room (larger photo below). We have been trying to find a rug for quite some time, and cant seem to agree on anything. He gravitates towards things that are very masculine, and I feminine. He likes warm, I like cool. The walls are a pale blue, and the furniture black leather. Oh, we have a black haired dog as well (she wanted to make sure she was in the picture)...

Vintage Mantel Displays from 5 Gardenias

The mantelpiece is the traditional place of honor for holiday decor: stockings, garlands, and wreaths all come to mind. If you're looking for a way to buck convention and dress your mantel in something less holiday-themed, we recommend checking out Etsy shop 5 Gardenias, whose product photos offer lots of ideas for styling the mantel with vintage objects...

Modern Rustic Farmhouses

The "modern rustic" look is a major trend in decor this year. At Apartment Therapy, we've noticed it in furniture collections, interiors, and the general zeitgeist that's followed on the heels of economic upheaval. It's a back-to-basics look that fits in well with the classic American farmhouse aesthetic...

A Bank & Key Holder In One

Have you ever fallen in love with a piggy bank? We have. Although there's no sign of swine in this model, it's oh so pretty and holds your keys as well. Even those who claim such things belong in the bedroom, we think this version is fetching enough to sit out in the open.

Tabletop Inspiration from Dining By Design
Chicago, November 5-7 2009

Last night, we attended the opening cocktail party for the annual fundraiser at the Merchandise Mart, Dining by Design. It's a three day industry event that raises funds for DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS). In between the chatting, sipping and snacking, we snapped a few photos of some of the always interesting tablescapes put together by local designers and firms for the event...

Why We Can't Wait for Fantastic Mr. Fox

110509mrfox.jpg

There are so many reasons why we're excited about Wes Anderson's interpretation of this classic Roald Dahl story, but the main one is the amazing level of detail that went into designing the stage sets, which have a nostalgic 1970s feel. Bonus points if you know the real-life inspiration for this particular interior. Click below for the answer and the movie trailer...

Kelly Hoppen's Gorgeous Georgian Townhome
Metropolitan Home

British designer Kelly Hoppen's townhome (enviously located near London's Portobello Road market) was a gut rehab. It's featured in the upcoming December issue of Metropolitan Home and naturally, it's pretty amazing. We love how Hoppen does black, white and silver. She gets them to look amazingly warm and rich - in this house, its all about the reflections...
