Ray's Staircase Renovation
House Call

Name: Ray James
Location: East Village, NYC

I just completed a new staircase renovation with a modern, minimal aesthetic. I needed more storage so I built out storage under the stairs and removed a previous cable railing to open up the space.

Studio Aalto: Alvar Aalto's Design Office
Studio Tour

Vero & Thierry's SoHo Chalet
House Tour

11-18-jill-tour-1.jpg

Name: Veronique & Thierry
Location: SoHo, Manhattan
Size: 700 square feet, 1 bedroom rental
Years lived in: 1+

When Vero and Thierry moved in together, they shed their respective furniture histories. Their new home might seem reminiscent of a couple of recent tours. That's because Maxime of house tour and house call fame has taken it upon himself to help out some friends in need. First it was Pierre, with his apartment in the sky and now Vero and Thierry in SoHo.

Location: Bushwick, Brooklyn NYC
Size: 770 square feet
Years lived in: 1

We on Apartment Therapy have checked in with illustrator and typographer Jessica Hische from time to time, showcasing her Delightful Hand-Crafted Initial Caps (used to the left) and Letterpress Alphabet Posters. It comes as no surprise that her home is as finely tailored as her work.

My Childhood Home: Growing Up Around Great Design
House Call

Name: Able family
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Lived In: 1977 - 1983

I learned to appreciate Marimekko, Herman Miller and good design at a young age — I grew up in a small house from 1907 that had been completely gutted and renovated by my parents. My architect dad and design-enthusiast mom did almost all of the work themselves and the home, in the Broad Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis, was featured in Indianapolis Home in February of 1980 and Home Magazine in 1981.

Karen's Urban Cottage
House Tour

Name: Karen Marsh
Profession: Full time: Java Developer, Hobby: Owner of vintage store MackeyBlue
Location: Hoboken, New Jersey
Size: About 1,150 square feet
Years lived in: 8

I first met Karen after I was browsing in her store, MackeyBlue, and both my husband and I were eyeing a gigantic old canvas map of Italy that hung behind the cash wrap. We must have been on our way somewhere and couldn't browse further but a day later I called her from work to inquire how much that map was selling for because it would look just perfect in our home. Too late, the map had sold and I vowed to myself to not hesitate next time I spotted a treasure. Karen herself has similar thinking and loves the hunt for vintage treasures so much that she not only opened her store but has furnished and decorated her whole house with her finds!

Stefanie's Limestone Renovation
House Call

Name: Stefanie
Location: Windsor Terrace neighborhood of Brooklyn, NYC

We bought a completely dilapidated limestone home in 2007. Friends would often ask things like "How long was this house abandoned?" It never was — someone lived here right up until he died on the front steps a few months before we bought it. or "Why did you buy this dump?" That question was funny at first until we were about half way through the renovation and wanted to kill each other!

Anna Gabriel's Downtown Pad
House Tour

11-9-anna-gabriel-open.jpg

Name: Anna Gabriel
Location: Lower East Side, NYC
Type: Co-op apartment
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 3

It's no surprise that Anna's biggest home embarrassment is the lack of storage for her Rock Band guitars and drum kit, since she's the daughter of Rock legend Peter Gabriel. Within minutes of visiting her Lower East Side apartment you get a sense of Anna and her love for people and the arts. Her home is a soulful pad and you realize the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Anna is an amazing artist in her own right — a successful documentary maker, photographer and humanitarian.

Sarah's Bright & Tidy Live/Work Space
House Call

Name: Sarah
Location: Upper West Side, New York City

My apartment went through a massive transformation — from grungy rental to urban, light-filled oasis. The use of space is smart. It's about 480 square feet that comfortably houses 2 adults who both work from home, 2 cats and 2 bikes.

Ann's International Rest Stop
House Tour

annmhousetour26lg1.jpg

Name: Ann
Location: West Village, Manhattan
Size: 2,000 square feet, 3-bedroom house
Years lived in: 10 years

Ann lives amidst Afghan, Uzbek, Turkmen and Indian textiles — to name a few of the things she has carried home over the past 20 years — from around the world. For the past ten years, she's been assembling them in a mid-19th century, 4-story home in the West Village.

Keegan's Balance of New & Old
House Call

Name: Keegan
Location: Hackney neighborhood of London, England

This is my Victorian 1 bedroom converted apartment on the edge of a park in Hackney, London. Moving into my apartment presented many space issues. I was renting a much larger property prior, so I had to find unique ways to store and display my things with the flat feeling cluttered.

Dean & Steve's Rustic Railroad
House Tour

dean11.JPG

Name: Dean Sawyer & Steve Drum
Location: Greenpoint, Brooklyn
Size: about 1,200 square feet
Years lived in: ½
Who else lives here? A mouse (seen once)

Stepping into Dean and Steve's sparse yet comfortable apartment there's a strong desire to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and skim through a well-worn copy of Moby Dick.

Paul's Asian Tribute
House Tour

paulhousetourlg1.JPG

Name: Paul
Location: West Village, Manhattan
Size: 1,700 square feet, 1-bedroom rental
Years lived in: 4 years

While it may seem hard to believe, Paul gut renovated his spacious rental apartment. Clearly, it was in his interest as well as that of his landlord. And neither will regret it. Paul and his partner have an amazing home that fits their needs and aesthetic, while the landlord gets a valuable and eminently more rentable property.

Elodie's Fun & Feminine Studio
House Call

Name: Elodie
Location: Paris, France

I'm a fashion blogger, designer and interior architect and I recently did took some pics of my very little home in Paris — it's a 26 square meter (280 square feet!) studio where I had to find creative solutions to using the space. And I did! We have a little bedroom, a huge wardrobe, a desk to work at home, a dining space and a great living room.
