Rex Ray-Inspired Home

9-5-08 amy lau 2.jpgIt's no secret that we here at Apartment Therapy are big fans of SF-based artist Rex Ray. His colorful, biomorphic work is captivating and, we've always found, inspiring. It seems we're not the only ones who glean inspiration from his work, as this apartment attests to.

Posters from the WPA

We are getting a kick out of these old posters from the Works Progress Administration. Some are pretty funny (see "MILK: For Summer Thirst"), others are quite beautiful, and all offer a glimpse at American life during the 1930s and 40s.

Another Look at BoConcept's Ottoman/Bed

091509 boconcept bed.jpgWe showed this ottoman/bed on Apartment Therapy a few years ago, but after seeing it in person the other day we decided it was worth another look. It doesn't hurt that the price is $200 less now than we quoted before. See it transformed into a bed after the jump...

A Peek Around the New Rose and Radish

Rose and Radish may have switched their Hayes Valley digs for a new home on the Embarcadero, but one thing that hasn't changed is their excellent eye for highly covetable goods. Here are a few things we were drooling over on a recent trip...

Storing a Collection in a Lamp

091409 match collection lamp.jpgOh, we've always wanted to do this! We don't have a collection of matchbooks like Shauna and Stephen from Something's Hiding in Here, but filling this lamp with Pez dispensers, plastic toys, or any small, not-too-precious collectible sounds like a great idea...

Mergers & Acquistions
SF Chronicle

091309 sfgate home collection.jpgThe SF Chronicle ran a story this last weekend that couldn't be more apropos for Collections Month on Apartment Therapy. Several design experts from around the city (including the owner of this amazing home in Noe Valley) share how they showcase their collections at home...

Shades of Pink
The Wallflower

091109 pink stripes.jpgSFGate's design blog The Wallflower recently featured the colorful house of a photographer and art director couple living in North Oakland. The paint choices throughout the home are very nice, but this image really blew us away...

Five Fabulous Fireplaces

To soon? Yes, summer is just ending, but we're already thinking about cozying up to a roaring fire in the coming months. Here are a few inspiring ideas for the hearth, including one for an apartment, believe it or not....

Window Seating for Small Spaces

091009 window seating.jpgBesides creating a nice spot for gazing out onto the world, a window seat adds unobtrusive seating for guests and room for storage. Best of all, you can easily replicate this look on the cheap...

Swivel Clock from Anthropologie

sc091009.jpgWe have a thing for double-sided clocks, but finding one in a schoolhouse style is nearly impossible without either a ticket to Europe or a frantic bidding war on eBay. Instead, we'll consider the In-Motion Clock...

Roundup: All Things Nautical for the Home

Some think nautical decor should be relegated to theme rooms and beach houses, but we beg to disagree. An anchor here and a boat or two there can look understated while still showing your love of the sea. Here's a roundup of nautical decor that we like for the home...

A Collection of Dishes

090909 dish collection 1.jpgEveryday dish- and glassware is rarely given the level of prestige as a most collections, but if you're relying on open shelving, a change of mindset might be necessary. A bit of editing and attention to color and/or shape can give even the most ragtag group of dishes a cohesive tone...

How To: Create a Thomas Wold-Like Shelving Unit

090809 wold shelving unit.jpgEver since we took in Thomas Wold's exhibit at The Curiosity Shoppe a while back, we've had a healthy obsession with the artist's collaged furniture. His column in Readymade Magazine, Solid Wold, is also a great source for crave-worthy projects, and this month is no exception. Check out his instructions for creating a shelving system like the one shown here...

Frank Lloyd Wright Furniture at DWR

090809lloyd_wright dwr.jpgFrank Lloyd Wright believed that the interior furnishings of a home should be visually unified with the surrounding architecture, so it's no wonder that he often created furniture specifically for some of the buildings he designed. Now Design Within Reach has teamed with the late architect's foundation to bring several of those pieces back into production - no Wright house necessary...

Rectangular Frame Arrangement

083009 frame arrangement.jpgThe trend in hanging art lately seems to run towards walls of mismatched frames clustered devil-may-care to create an amorphous arrangement. It's a look we often love, though we admit this photo felt like a breath of fresh air when we stumbled upon it...
