This idea for a bookshelf room divider is such an easy and inexpensive way to divide two spaces. When we saw it blogged on The Little House in the City, we remembered thinking it was great when we first saw it in Martha Stewart Living.

Just stack two short, wide bookcases on top of one another to separate rooms, or areas of rooms. In these photos, the top bookcase faces the dining area and holds dishes. On the other side, in the entryway, hooks have been attached to its back. Sliding doors were attached to the bottom bookcase.

It's a great idea. Height and width could vary depending on the size of the bookcases. I'm trying to find a solution for storing three dimensional art when. This has the wheels turning.

Good idea - Martha's Blueprint magazine had an even better example of a twist on this same type of thing a month or so ago (which may, in fact, be the current issue, as that magazine seems to come out whenever it darn well pleases).

I did something similar to divide our dining room from our living room using four BILLY book cases from Ikea. We originaly had two tall and two short book cases along the wall. To divide the space, I put the tall ones back to back and the short ones as well, and came out from the wall in an "L" shape. We get a space divider without destroying the openness, book storage and a nice bit of horizontal shelving for art or plants (though in our case, books eventually took over that space as well. The weight of the cases push into each other for stability as well.
