BEFORE

Tell us the tools and resources you used for the project:
I already had the desk and the fabric, so I went and bought

  • Paint (Behr 'Wild Raisin')
  • Knobs (from Anthropologie)
  • Curtain finials to make the desk taller, and
  • Fodder for the decoupage (though I already had some fodder laying around)
    The only tools required were
  • Sand paper (and block)
  • Drill
  • Pliers
  • Paint brushes
  • Decoupage glue
  • and an exacto blade with a mat

    TOOLS

Share step-by-step instructions for how you completed the project:

  • First, i sanded the desk, drawer fronts, and finials to prepare them for painting
  • I painted them with 3 coats of paint
  • Then I attached the finials to the bottom of the legs
  • I replaced the existing knobs with the new, pretty knobs, and began doing my decoupage on the top of the desk
  • Some of the fodder I cut-out using an exacto blade

    1-29-amber3.jpgDURING

  • I glued down the metropolitan map of Paris at an angle, and spritzed around the edges of the desk with water, and ripped off the excess paper
  • I then did the same with the blank space on the left of the map with sheets of music, and on the right side with pages from a french-english dictionary
  • Then I glued down various fodder, until i achieved the look i was going for
  • Aftwards, I covered the entire top with verithane to protect the decoupage
  • I cut 5 panels of the fabric, and hemmed and attached velcro to 4 of them
  • The fifth panel just required a fold-over for a small curtain rod
  • I attached the curtain hardware to the desk, and then hung the curtains
  • Et Voila! The desk was complete

I think that it fits in perfectly with the style you've established and is completely new way to hide a television that I've never seen, which could be adapted to other styles. It's very clever!

I think your idea to hide the TV with pretty fabric when not in use is a good one. But is it comfortable/practical to watch a TV placed on the floor like that? I think this idea would work better as under-vanity storage in a powder room (or to similar effect in a kitchen or laundry room).

The top picture looks like some kind of shrine to your tv, with the candles and the framed photo. I think this is plenty clever, but doesn't seem practical. Frankly, I think the desk looked better pre-re imagination.

This clearly works in your home and was an extremely creative way to accomplish your goals.

I'm voting WOW! because the point of the Jumpstart is to make your home work better for you, not to make it work better for Dwell.

I really like this--great solution for hiding the TV. And, I may use your idea for the top of a chest I have. I have a feeling that any poo poo comments are because your style isn't their style, which isn't what this is about at all. Good job!

The Decoupage is on top of the desk, right?

I really like the fabric. It looks like it goes well with your furnishings.

Out of curiosity, do you sit on the floor when you watch TV? (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

I think it would be odd to watch the television while it's on the floor, and your style is definitely not my style, but at the same time this is sort of clever and was probably a fun and satisfying project to do, and it's a good reminder that style is a very personal thing and that that is okay!

Clever! If the goal was to hide the tv, I must say I did not notice it immediately in the first photo.

    Wow...

What a humbling set of comments. It seems my project solicits passionate responses equally of love and hate. I know that my taste is unique, but I didn't expect to faced with such vehemence.

To answer questions: yes, the purpose of this furniture is to hide the TV. I live in a 600 sq. ft studio, and can hardly handle another huge piece of furniture. The TV is not a focal point in my life: i watch movies, news, and pbs, and I didn't want it to be displayed prominently in my apartment. Yes, sometimes odd to watch it on the ground, but I'm used to it, and prefer it to displaying the tv so it sucks up every ounce of space. It's a good solution for the size of my space.

Yes, the 'decoupage' is what I did with the top of the desk.

And the vanity chair was picked up at a yard sale for $5.

Thank you to those of you who can still appreciate this piece, though it may not be in sync with how you perceive your own style.

The pinks, maroons, and salmon colors were warm and inviting. Using stripes with florals is a good interior decorator move. Stripes are just about good with any design and you recognized that. Your balance was superb. The "weight" of the medium and smaller pictures equalized the weight of the larger side picture. You had to fill in the space between the spriped boxes and the higher medium picture. You did that with candles. I am not a tv person at all. In fact I have no tv in my living room where people come to socialize and 'chat'. I dislike talking over people on tv. (seems impolite even then) Since you have a small space in your apt., you did the tv thing right. It is not a prioity in your life, nor mine! And, I am so glad you kept the stripped chair next to it all. It provided an "odd" number of the 3 major larger pieces. If you had gone with just 2 large pieces it would have seemed vacant and, the interior decorator realizes, the human mind likes uneven.............just look at nature !

I really like alot of the elements of this room and this project.

I am also not a tv person - I don't have cable and I really only watch movies and the like. But I think that having the tv on the floor would not work for me. The viewing angle would just be all wrong and uncomfortable. Also I sometimes have friends over for movie night so I need the tv to be situated in a way that works for other people and not just me.

I really liked the idea of creating a fabric skirt for that desk and I can totally see that as a solution to hiding things that I want hidden such as a pile of shoes, a laundry bin, or a catbox. I was totally inspired by your project in that sense and would make a version of that to have in my home for sure.

The setup of your room is not my personal taste but I agree with what other have said which is that it is consistent and suits your personal style.

    Good Job!
