We've said it before and we'll say it again: for sheer longevity and versatility, well-made building toys are probably the best toy investment you can make. This newly released building set -- simply named Twig -- has "instant classic" written all over it. But as awesome as these wooden blocks are, the story of their journey from Etsy to Fat Brain Toys is possibly even better...

Ohdeedoh reader Kelly wrote us to share her excitement at how a small independent Etsy toymaker got "discovered" by the toy powerhouse Fat Brain Toys:

I was browsing Etsy for handmade wooden toys and came across this. I jumped on the deal as the blocks looked just fascinating, open ended and perfect for my family. When they arrived I was even more thrilled. This toy is just fantastic. My boys love to make robots, buildings, and so on. I love to use the pieces to teach colors, shapes, and counting.

I live in Omaha and one day, after a visit to the Omaha Children's museum where I saw Fat Brain Toys' Dado blocks, I decided to send them an email with a link to the Etsy purchase I had made. They contacted the seller and the ball kept rolling from there.

We're glad that ball kept rolling! Not only is this an inspiring story, but we know a certain almost-four-year-old who'll be getting a set of these versatile blocks for his birthday.

Twig retails for $49.95 (for the 72-piece set pictured in this post) at Fat Brain Toys.
